Students taking this course will pursue the indelible influence African Americans have had on the history of the United States by tracing the accomplishments and obstacles they faced from the slave trade to emancipation. Students will learn about the political, economic, social, religious, and cultural factors that have influenced African American life as well as explore the role of African Americans in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Students will come face-to-face with individuals who changed the course of African American history and learn more about slavery, racism, and the Civil Rights Movement. By analyzing the effects of segregation, violence and justice in the Jim Crow era, students will understand the causes of the race riots and the Civil Rights Movement. Students will also explore how the history and experience of African Americans continues to influence current events today.
